My Story
David Putman's Bio

I have served on the Auxano Team since 2013 and currently serve as its disciple-making lead and multiplication specialist. I also serve as a Strategic Leader and Founder of Planting the Gospel, a disciple-making network committed to multiplying disciples, churches, and networks.
I have a long history of church multiplication dating back to 1988 when I served in south Atlanta as a church planting missionary, planting my first church. My experience includes serving with the North American Mission Board (NAMB), where I was responsible for helping set strategic direction for the Church Planting Group. While serving with the NAMB, I was part of a team responsible for the development and implementation of the Church Planting System and was the architect behind the Nehemiah Project, a strategy that brought church planting to the forefront of seminary training.
I was also a founding member and later Executive Pastor of Mountain Lake Church (now Local Church) in North Atlanta and co-founded ChurchPlanters.com, a coaching ministry for church planting leaders.
In 2022, Todd Wilson, then CEO of Exponential, approached the Auxano Team, and a partnership was formed to develop The Multipliers Journey, of which I have served as the chief architect. The Multipliers Journey is a “how-to” coaching/consulting process for churches wanting to start planting or 10X their current church planting.
I’ve written or contributed to the following books:
- Church Planting at the End of 20th Century (Contributor with Charles Chaney) (1993)
- Seven Steps for Church Planting (with Tom Cheyney and Van Sanders) (2003)
- Breaking the Missional Code (With Ed Stetzer) (2006)
- Breaking the Discipleship Code (2008)
- Detox for the Overly Religious (2010)
- The Gospel Disciples (2012)
- I Woke Up in Heaven (2012)
- The Gospel Disciple Life Journal (2020)
- The Gospel Disciple Life (2020)
I earned a Master of Divinity degree from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri, and an undergraduate degree in psychology from Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina.
I currently live in the Atlanta Metro area with my wife, Tami. Tami and I have two grown children and three grandchildren. When I’m not traveling around the country coaching and consulting disciple-making/church-planting churches, I spend my time shepherding a local disciple-making movement that began in my fitness community.
